Looking after your back at a desk

Looking after your back at a desk

Back pain is one of the most common complaints among people who work at desks, and the usual response is to buy something, a fancier chair, a special cushion, a standing desk. Equipment can help, but it is rarely the main answer. The main answer is movement.

The real problem is stillness

There is a tempting myth of the one perfect posture that, if only you could hold it, would save your back. In reality, the best posture is the next one. Backs do not like being held in any single position for hours, even a good one. The pain usually comes from staying still, not from sitting wrongly for a moment.

What genuinely helps

A sensible setup matters, but movement matters more.

  • Get up and move every half hour, even briefly, this is the big one
  • Set the screen at eye level so you are not craning down
  • Support your lower back and keep your feet flat on the floor
  • Build some general strength, a stronger body tolerates desk work better

The reassuring part

Most everyday back pain is not a sign of damage, and it tends to settle. Staying gently active is far better than resting in fear of it. You do not need to spend a fortune on equipment to look after your back at a desk. You need to stop sitting still for hours, vary your position, and keep moving. The body was built to move, and a desk job is mostly an exercise in remembering that.
