Stand in the queue at Boots this week and you'll see three different SPF philosophies collide at the till: someone stockpiling factor 50 for a fortnight in Corfu, someone buying factor 15 because "anything higher is a con", and someone not buying suncream at all because British weather "doesn't really do sun". All three are working from partial information, and the gap between what the bottle promises and what actually happens on your skin is bigger than most people realise.

What the SPF number actually measures

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it measures exactly one thing: how much longer it takes UVB rays to redden skin with the product on versus bare skin. Factor 30 doesn't mean "30 minutes of protection" — that's the single most common misunderstanding, and it's the one that gets people burnt on cloudy days when they assumed the clock had barely started. In practice, factor 30 filters out roughly 96.7% of UVB rays when applied correctly; factor 50 filters out about 98%. That 1.3 percentage point gap looks trivial on paper. On a redhead with Fitzpatrick type I skin standing on a Cornish beach in August, it's the difference between a mild tan line and a genuinely unpleasant evening.

Here's the catch almost nobody accounts for: "applied correctly" means roughly a teaspoon and a half for the face and neck alone, and about six to eight teaspoons for a full body in a swimsuit. Most people apply somewhere between a quarter and a half of that amount, which drops the real-world protection of a factor 50 product down to something closer to factor 15–20. This isn't a guess — it's the standard finding cited by the British Association of Dermatologists, and it explains why so many people who "definitely put suncream on" still come home lobster-coloured.

UVA gets ignored, and that's the mistake that ages skin

SPF numbers only measure UVB protection. UVA — the rays responsible for long-term skin ageing, deeper skin damage, and a meaningful chunk of skin cancer risk — is covered by a separate rating that most shoppers never look at: the UVA star system, shown as a circled "UVA" logo plus up to five stars on UK and EU packaging. Anything below four stars is doing half a job, whatever the SPF number on the front says. Ultrasun and La Roche-Posay's Anthelios range consistently hit five stars; some budget own-brand sun sprays scrape by on three, which matters if wrinkle prevention rather than just avoiding sunburn is the actual goal.

Skip the sun for two decades because you live in Manchester and it "isn't sunny enough to matter" and you're still exposed to UVA on every overcast day, since roughly 80% of it passes straight through cloud cover. That's the uncomfortable bit dermatologists keep repeating and shoppers keep ignoring: the sunniest-looking days aren't necessarily the highest-UV days, and a bright but hazy April afternoon in the UK can carry a higher UV index than people expect for the season.

Mineral versus chemical filters — the difference that actually matters

Mineral (physical) filters use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to sit on the skin's surface and reflect UV rays; chemical filters like avobenzone or octocrylene absorb UV radiation and convert it to heat. The internet-wide panic about chemical filters being "toxic" is mostly not supported by UK and EU regulatory evidence — the Cosmetic Products Regulation sets strict concentration limits, and products sold legally in Boots or Superdrug have cleared that bar. Where mineral filters do win is for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin, since they're far less likely to cause the stinging reaction some people get from chemical formulas, particularly around the eyes.

The real trade-off is cosmetic, not medical. Mineral sunscreens historically left a visible white cast, though newer micronised formulas — Garnier's Sensitive Advanced range is a decent budget example at around £9 — have mostly solved that. Chemical filters absorb more easily and suit makeup routines better, which is why most higher-end facial SPFs, including Anthelios UVMune 400 at roughly £17–19, blend both filter types rather than picking a side.

A quick reality check on "waterproof" claims

No sunscreen is genuinely waterproof — UK and EU labelling law doesn't even permit that word on packaging, which is why you'll only ever see "water resistant" on a bottle bought here. Water-resistant products have been tested to maintain SPF after 40 or 80 minutes of water immersion, not indefinitely, and towel-drying strips off a meaningful amount regardless of the claim on the bottle.

The vitamin D argument doesn't hold up the way people think

Every summer, someone argues that wearing suncream daily blocks vitamin D synthesis and is quietly causing a deficiency epidemic. The evidence doesn't back this up in any strong way. Studies tracking real-world sunscreen users — who, remember, apply far less than the tested amount and rarely reapply on schedule — consistently find vitamin D levels aren't meaningfully lower than in non-users. The UK's actual vitamin D problem has much more to do with weak winter sun (the angle is too low for synthesis from October to March across most of the country) than summer suncream habits, which is why the NHS recommends a 10 microgram supplement for adults during autumn and winter regardless of sunscreen use.

Don't use vitamin D as the excuse to skip SPF on a June afternoon. Ten to fifteen minutes of unprotected midday exposure on forearms and face is genuinely enough for most people's vitamin D needs — you don't need to forgo suncream for the other six hours you're outside to get the benefit.

Reapplication is where almost everyone actually fails

Buying the right SPF and UVA rating solves maybe half the problem. The bigger failure point, by a wide margin, is reapplication — or the total absence of it. Suncream should go back on every two hours outdoors, immediately after swimming or heavy sweating, and straight after towel-drying. Most people apply once in the morning and assume that's the job done for the day, which is roughly equivalent to taking one dose of a twice-daily antibiotic and expecting full-course results.

  • Set a phone reminder for reapplication if you're at the beach or gardening for hours — it sounds excessive, but it's the single change that closes the biggest real-world protection gap
  • Keep a stick or spray version in a bag or car for genuine top-ups, not just the bottle sitting at home on the bathroom shelf
  • Ears, hairline, tops of feet, and the back of the neck are the most commonly missed spots, and they're also where a disproportionate number of skin cancers are diagnosed

What to actually buy, and what to skip

For daily face use under makeup, La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Fluid (around £18 for 50ml) or the newer Garnier Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced (about £11) are solid five-star UVA options at a reasonable price per use, since a little goes a long way on the face alone. For full-body beach use, price-per-application matters more than brand prestige — Boots' own Soltan range and Nivea Sun both carry five-star UVA ratings at roughly a third of the cost of premium brands, and the SPF chemistry underneath is doing the same job. Skip anything marketed primarily on scent or "glow" finish if sun protection is the actual priority; those formulas often trade UVA coverage for cosmetic appeal, and the star rating on the back of the bottle will usually confirm it if you check.

For children, mineral formulas are generally the safer default given thinner, more reactive skin — Aveeno's kids mineral SPF 50 and Boots' Soltan Kids range are both reformulated regularly to stay reef-safe and fragrance-light, which matters if a child has any tendency toward eczema.

None of this works without the boring bit

The evidence on sun protection isn't actually contested or mysterious — the mechanisms are well understood, the regulation is strict, and the products sold on UK high streets meet real standards. What fails is behaviour: too little product, too rare reapplication, and a UVA star rating nobody checks. Buy the factor 30 with five UVA stars, use genuinely more than feels necessary, and put it back on after the swim. That's the whole method, and it's less exciting than any of the myths it replaces.
