The overrated detox, and what your liver already does

The overrated detox, and what your liver already does

Every January, and after every indulgent weekend, the detox industry swings into action. Cleansing teas, juice fasts, programmes promising to flush out toxins and reset your system. It is a multi-billion-pound business built on a misunderstanding of how the body works.

Your body already does this

The uncomfortable truth for the detox industry is that you already own a sophisticated detoxification system, and it works around the clock for free. Your liver and kidneys are constantly filtering and removing waste from your body. They do not need a special tea, a juice cleanse or a fortnight without solid food to do their job. The vague toxins these products promise to remove are rarely even named, because there is usually nothing specific to point to.

Why cleanses can backfire

Some detox regimes are not merely useless but mildly harmful.

  • Extreme juice fasts can leave you short on protein and energy
  • Some detox teas act as laxatives, which is not cleansing, just unpleasant
  • Very low-calorie cleanses often lead straight back to old habits
  • The quick weight loss is mostly water, and returns just as fast

What actually supports the system

If you want to help your liver and kidneys, the advice is gloriously dull, and free. Drink enough water, eat plenty of vegetables and fibre, go easy on alcohol, do not smoke, and get reasonable sleep. That is the whole programme. There is no product to buy, which is precisely why no one is advertising it to you. Save your money, your body has the detox covered.
